NISHIJIMA ORIGINAL OPEN EDITION WOODBLOCK PRINTS

NISHIJIMA, KATSUYUKI. Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Province of Japan. From 1964 to 1968 he studied the art of Woodblock Prints in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto as well as exhibiting  his work with the Kyoto independent artists and in solo displays. From 1972 he focused his immense talents on limited edition woodblocks using traditional old buildings as his main subject matter.

Katsuyuki Nishijima's woodblocks come in a number of formats and the larger sizes are limited editions of usually 500, all hand signed, titled and numbered but normally never dated. He has also produced a number of open edition woodblocks since the mid 1970s which are hand signed and titled and again not dated.

This woodblock dates from 1995 and shows Shogion in Kyoto. If you
look at the kimono hanging on the wall of the building you will see
the word SHIMA on it. This is the kanji word for Jima as in Nishijima's name.

This scene from 1995 is a quiet lane leading to the Yasaka Shrine
in Kyoto that Nishijima has given an almost mystical
 feel through perspective and contrast with
the umbrella as a focus.

The scene is a three hundred year old Yuba, which is Tofu, Shop
in Fuya town Kyoto. The Noren Cloth in the doorway
reads Yubahan which is the name of the store.

THIS IS A VERY EARLY WOODBLOCK created in the Mid 1970s.
Nishijima only began his woodblock career in 1972 so it is
among his first and it shows an historic tea shop named Hiranoya
in the Saga Region of Kyoto.
