UMETARO, AZECHI was Born in the Small Town of Uwajima in Ehime Province on the Island of Shikoku in 1902. Throughout his youth he Dreamed of Being an Artist and at about 18 years of age he purchased an Art Course by Correspondence. Two years later he moved to Tokyo and supported himself delivering newspapers while trying to complete this course. Later he worked in a Government printing office and whilst working there he began to teach himself the art of engraving plates using the equipment in the plant. After meeting some other woodblock artists he left his employment to work fulltime at the woodblock form but only managed to live a very meager lifestyle until after the Second World War when he managed to exhibit some of his work and gain acceptance as a serious artist. Later he was asked to exhibit in International shows in San Paulo and Lugano and now his work is housed in Many International Art Galleries and Museums.
