ORIGINAL: Created by the Artist and Published During His Lifetime
HAND PRINTED on Washi, Hand Made Japanese Mulberry Bark Paper, with Ink Bleed Through to the Reverse Side.
COLOURED with TRADITIONAL INKS from the PERIOD.
Details of relevant CENSOR SEALS and SIGNATURES are supplied with each Woodblock as PROOF OF AGE and AUTHENTICITY for antique prints.
UTAGAWA KUNISADA was
born in the Honjo district of Edo in 1786. He entered the school of
Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825), the leading actor-print designer of his
time, around 1800 as apprentice at the age of fourteen. His first
printed works began to appear in late 1807. When Toyokuni II died in
1835, ten years after the master, Kunisada was entitled to use the name
Toyokuni III and his recorded signatures in versions sometimes with both
names number over 200. Not all have so far been documented. He was one
of the most highly respected artists of his time and he died in 1865.#P3654 GHOST OF OIWA IN YOTSUYA

Scene is from the Series Edo no Hana Meisho-e which translates in to Flowers of Edo, a collection of famous places published by Katoya Seibei. It shows
Oiwa Inari Temple in Yotsuya in the centre of ancient Tokyo, The Ghost
Of Oiwa emerging from a Lantern and the top panel shows scenes from the
historic Japanese Horror Novel "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" where Oiwa was

SIGNATURE: Toyokuni Ga in Red ground Toshidama Cartouche in Lower Right of Scene. SIZE: 37cm x 25cm (14.5 inches x 9.9 inches) DATE: 1863 AUTHENTICITY: Titled No Ka Yotsuya in Main Cartouche with Aratame Censor Seal dated 11th Month 1863 in Left Margin. CONDITION:
Very Good For Age, Full Margins, Printed in Fine Washi with Strong Ink Bleed Through to the Reverse Side. See Photo. NOTES: This is an extremely Well Coloured and Rare Scene from this Famous and difficult to find series. The Panel in the bottom left showing the Inari temple was Created and is Signed by Utagawa Sadahide.
FOLLOWING TWO GHOST SCENES were Created by Chikanobu and Published in 1886. ABOUT THE ARTIST: CHIKANOBU, HASHIMOTO lived from 1838 until 1912. He was a student of both Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Utagawa Kunisada then Later Toyohara Kunichika. His Signatures included a number of “Go” names including Ikkakusai and Yoshu and he created a number of different series in a wide variety of genres. His most famous are those of Beautiful Women and Meiji Era Traditions while among the rarest are his Works of Kabuki Scenes inspired by his master Kunichika in the first years of their liaison.

NOTES: This is One of the Great Woodblock Print Ghost Illustrations depicting the brave warrior Kusunoki Masatsura as a boy, fending off evil creatures. Here the boy takes on a wild badger and this horrific ghost. The inset above shows Masatsura as a grown man reading his death poem on a temple door before the Battle of Shijo, where he lost his life.

All of his work is Rare but this Amazing Depiction of the Magic Nine Tailed Fox, a Creature who could transform itself into a beautiful woman to lure its prey is an Excellent example of his work and a Very, hard to find and Collectible Woodblock.

Korin was an artist who lived from 1658 until 1716. This woodblock
print of the God of Thunder was carved in the 1890s from one of his
original paintings and the Unsodo Woodblock Print Company of Kyoto
purchased the woodblocks. This example is printed from this original
1890s carved woodblocks by Unsodo.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: HIROMITSU, NAKAZAWA was Born in Tokyo and Lived from 1874 to 1964 . He studied Western painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts for four years prior to 1900 under the tutorship if Kuroda Seiki and during the difficult years of the early 20 th Century was chosen as one of the artists to create a scene from the Complete Works of Chikamatsu which was published in the 1920s. He did not gain any great appreciation or recognition until after the Second World War when his style and skill was accepted by a wide audience and he won a number of awards in Japan.
