KUNICHIKA, TOYOHARA

TOYOHARA KUNICHIKA was born in 1835 in Kyobashi, Tokyo and given the name Oshima Yasohachi. His father, Oshima Kyuju owned a public bath house or Sento but he was not a good businessman and lost this business in Toyohara Kunichika’s childhood. In his early teens Toyohara became a student of Utagawa Kunisada and in 1854 and later studied with Chikanobu. At only 19 years of age he created his first Woodblock Scene using the name Kunichika which was taken from parts of his teachers’ names.

He was an alcoholic and playboy but he quickly learned the skills required to create excellent scenes of everyday life, Kabuki drama and the beautiful women who had become part of his lifestyle.
